How to Read a Bazi Chart
Reading a Bazi chart may look intimidating at first — eight Chinese characters arranged in four columns, surrounded by terms like Ten Gods, Na Yin, and Luck Cycles. But with a structured approach, anyone can learn to extract meaningful insights from any chart.
The 5-Step Reading Framework
Professional Bazi readers follow a systematic process. Here is a simplified version that captures 80% of what you need to know:
Identify the Day Master
The Day Master (日主) is the Heavenly Stem of the Day Pillar. It represents the person whose chart you are reading. Everything else in the chart is interpreted relative to this stem. Ask:
- •What element is the Day Master? (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water)
- •Is it Yang or Yin? Yang stems are active, outward, and expansive. Yin stems are receptive, inward, and refined.
- •What season was the person born in? A Wood Day Master born in Spring is naturally strong; born in Autumn, it is weakened by Metal.
Assess Day Master Strength
Determine whether the Day Master is strong (身旺) or weak (身弱). This is the most important judgment in Bazi reading because it tells you what the chart needs:
Strong Day Master
Supported by same-element stems, born in a favorable season, with resource and companion elements present. Needs output (食伤) and wealth (财) to release excess energy.
Weak Day Master
Surrounded by controlling or draining elements, born in an unfavorable season. Needs resource (印) and companions (比劫) to strengthen and protect.
Map the Ten Gods
The Ten Gods (十神) describe how each stem in the chart relates to the Day Master. They are the "actors" in your life's drama — each playing a specific role:
比肩 (Companion)
Same element, same polarity. Represents self-reliance, siblings, competition.
劫财 (Rival)
Same element, opposite polarity. Represents ambition, risk-taking, financial fluctuation.
食神 (Output)
You generate this element. Represents creativity, expression, children, enjoyment.
伤官 (Talent)
You generate this element (Yin-Yang reversed). Represents unconventional talent, rebellion, sharp intellect.
偏财 (Indirect Wealth)
You control this element (same polarity). Represents speculative income, father, casual relationships.
正财 (Direct Wealth)
You control this element (opposite polarity). Represents stable income, wife, disciplined earning.
七杀 (Challenge)
This element controls you (same polarity). Represents pressure, ambition, authority, risk.
正官 (Authority)
This element controls you (opposite polarity). Represents discipline, career, social status, rules.
偏印 (Unconventional Resource)

Look at which Ten Gods appear most prominently in the Month Pillar (career) and Day Branch (marriage). These tell you the dominant themes of your professional and relationship life.
Check Branch Interactions
The Earthly Branches interact in ways that can dramatically reshape a chart's meaning. These interactions happen beneath the surface — they represent hidden dynamics:
Clash (冲)
Opposite branches collide, creating tension and change. 子午冲 disrupts stability but can also catalyze breakthroughs.
Combine (合)
Compatible branches merge, softening edges and creating alliances. 寅亥合 strengthens Wood energy.
Three Combine (三合局)
Three branches form an elemental power bloc. 申子辰 creates massive Water energy that can dominate the chart.
Punish (刑)
Branches punish each other, creating internal conflict and repeated patterns of difficulty.
Read the Luck Cycles
The birth chart is your constitution — fixed for life. But the 10-Year Luck Cycles (大运) and Annual Luck (流年) bring moving energy that activates different parts of your chart at different times. Reading luck cycles involves:
- •Favorable cycles: Stems and branches that support your Day Master bring opportunity, growth, and ease.
- •Challenging cycles: Stems and branches that control or drain your Day Master bring obstacles, pressure, and necessary transformation.

The Day Pillar and Day Master are far more important for personal analysis.
Judging a chart as "good" or "bad"

Ignoring hidden stems
The hidden stems inside branches often contain critical information, especially in the Day Branch (spouse palace).
Overlooking season of birth
A Fire Day Master born in Summer is completely different from one born in Winter.
